Capital Briefs: Assets in Minority-Owned Thrifts Up 26%

Assets held by minority-owned thrifts rose 26% to $5.9 billion during 1995, the Office of Thrift Supervision reported Monday.

In its annual report to Congress regarding its activities to support these thrifts, the agency said that minority thrift assets added up to 0.77% of the industry's assets on Dec. 31, 1995. At the end of 1994, minority thrifts owned 0.61% of the industry's assets.

The Office of Thrift Supervision counted 39 minority-owned institutions in 1995 - 18 owned by blacks, 14 owned by Asians, and 7 owned by Hispanics. The total is down one from 1994. According to OTS data, a nonminority thrift acquired a black-owned thrift and a national bank bought a Hispanic- owned thrift. That loss was partially off-set by a Hispanic-owned start-up, which acquired four branches from the Resolution Trust Corp.

Ninety-two percent of minority thrifts were "well capitalized" at the end of last year, while the remainder were "adequately capitalized," the thrift regulator reported.
