Tech Bytes: On-Line-Service Use Seen Reaching 34% by 2000

Jupiter Communications estimates that 35.2 million households, or about 34% of U.S. homes, will use on-line computer services by 2000.

Use of on-line services - such as America Online, Compuserve, and Prodigy - is an indicator consumer appetite for PC-based consumer services in general.

"Predictions of imminent doom for the proprietary services were obviously premature, said Adam Schoenfeld, vice president at Jupiter.

Previously, Jupiter has predicted that the number of PC-based home banking users should rise from about 700,000 today to more than 13 million by 2000.
