Barnett CEO Takes Leave for Alcohol Treatment

Barnett Banks Inc. said Charles E. Rice, its chairman and chief executive officer, has taken short-term medical leave to admit himself to an alcohol treatment facility.

Allen L. Lastinger Jr., Barnett's president and chief operating officer, will assume Mr. Rice's role on a temporary basis, the bank said.

Mr. Rice, 60, has been chairman of Barnett since 1984.
