Senate Fund-Raising Probers Subpoena 20 Depository Institutions

Twenty banks, thrifts, and credit unions were subpoenaed Tuesday by a Senate committee investigating fund-raising irregularities in last year's elections.

The banks named in the subpoenas included Chase Manhattan Bank, New York; Bank of America, Texas; Chevy Chase Savings Bank, Maryland; and Bank of Hawaii. Bank-Fund Staff Federal Credit Union in Washington also was named.

The subpoenas were among 26 issued Tuesday by the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee. To date, it has subpoenaed 40 depository institutions.

Most of the subpoenas requested information on the bank accounts of Democratic National Committee contributors whose donations were returned, said Paul Clark, a spokesman for the Senate panel.

"We're trying to find out where the returned money ultimately came from," Mr. Clark said.
