Capital Briefs: Credit Union Hotel Tax Exemption Overturned

The Supreme Court on Monday overturned a decision exempting credit union officials traveling on business from state hotel taxes.

In a one-paragraph ruling in Anaheim v. California Credit Union League, the justices ordered the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit to reconsider its decision exempting credit unions from hotel taxes. The justices said their recent decision in Arkansas v. Farm Credit Services established a new precedent for tax cases that should be applied to the credit union dispute.

In the Arkansas case, the justices ruled that state courts-and not federal courts-should decide whether federally chartered, nonprofit institutions are subject to state taxes.
