Capital Briefs: Leach Reform Bill's Unveiling Is Delayed

Chairman Jim Leach did not unveil on Tuesday, as expected, the financial reform bill the House Banking Committee will vote on June 17.

Due out today, the legislation is expected to merge the banking and thrift charters while barring any mixture of banking with nonfinancial companies.

America's Community Bankers, fearing the reform bill would strip thrifts of activity and affiliation powers, urged committee members Tuesday to leave the thrift charter alone.

"What they are going to do is do significant damage to key aspects of the thrift charter, and that is absolutely unacceptable," ACB president Paul A. Schosberg said in an interview.
