Schlumberger Offers A Java-Standard Card

Schlumberger said it has come out with its first smart card under Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java Card standard.

In what it calls the Cyberflex Pre-Release Developers Kit, Schlumberger is including Cyberflex cards, a smart card reader that connects to a personal computer, and conversion software for the Java language.

Schlumberger, along with its French smart card rival Gemplus, Visa, Citibank, and others, is among the key supporters of the Java Card API- applications programming interface. The programming method promotes portability and flexibility in chip products, said Jon Kannegaard, vice president in Sun's JavaSoft unit.
