Tech Bytes: Security Group Tests Biometric ID Devices

The National Computer Security Association has begun a testing and certification program for biometric authentication devices.

Using certification criteria recently presented at a meeting of the Commercial Biometric Developer Consortium, the computer security group aims to promote technologies and performance standards that will "make the digital world a safer place," said association president Peter Tippett, NCSA's president.

The Carlisle, Pa., association will monitor devices that recognize speech, fingerprint, hand geometry, iris, and face characteristics. Vendors have been submitting test versions and the first results are to be released Sept. 22.
