Cards Briefs: HNC Fraud Software Wins Two Contracts

First Union Corp. will use HNC Software Inc.'s Capstone and Falcon Sentry systems in its credit card application processing, HNC announced.

Capstone, customizable to a bank's strategic goals, is capable of processing 10,000 applications per hour, providing high-speed network access to analyst workstations.

Falcon Sentry, which will be integrated with First Union's Capstone system, uses neural networks, intelligent consistency checking, and verification-management rules to attack the application fraud problem.

"First Union demands the best, and I am delighted that HNC's newest technology made the cut," said HNC president Robert North.

The $137 billion-asset First Union has used the Falcon credit card fraud detection system for more than two years and recently installed the Falcon Expert fraud detection rules subsystem.

Separately, HNC said Credicard Brasil, Latin America's largest credit card issuer, had signed a seven-year agreement to use Falcon and Falcon Expert.

After experiencing a sudden growth in fraud, Credicard set a goal of decreasing fraud losses by at least $5 million in the next year.
