Capital Briefs: ABA Offers Consumer Privacy Guidelines

Marking the industry's latest effort to convince the federal government that banks can protect consumer privacy without regulation, the American Bankers Association on Monday released a set of best-practices guidelines.

ABA urged banks to correct inaccurate data promptly, limit employee access to confidential information, and restrict data-gathering activities to those that benefit customers.

The principles were modeled after guidelines released by the Consumer Bankers Association. Officials from ABA, CBA, and Bankers Roundtable will meet next month to forge uniform industry guidelines.
