Smart Bits: Gemplus Joins Web Interoperability Group

Gemplus Corp. said it has joined the World Wide Web Consortium, a multi-industry group co-sponsored by Massachusetts Institute of Technology that promotes technical interoperability on the Internet.

Gemplus joined because of its belief that smart cards "are a proven component of any Internet security framework," said Michel Roux, head of the French-owned card maker's multimedia business division.

"In addition, smart cards bring other important functionality to Internet applications such as portability, user convenience, and flexibility," Mr. Roux said. "Numerous, truly personal services will be enabled by smart cards, such as payment, loyalty, and other personalized products."
