In Brief: Wash. Bank Collects In Embezzlement Loss

United Security Bancorp. got a $637,000 insurance payment last week to reimburse it for a former employee's embezzlement.

The $235 million-asset bank said a former employee circumvented its internal controls over eight years. The bank did not identify the employee but late last fall sued Vivian Garcia, a former senior operations officer at its Home Security Bank subsidiary.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is still investigating.

The insurance payment, which is equivalent to 11 cents per share after taxes, will be credited to the bank's third-quarter earnings. Last year the embezzlement reduced the bank's earnings by $530,000 to $3.2 million.
