Tech Bytes: NCR to Incorporate Computer Associates Tool

NCR Corp. said it plans to combine its computers with data base and network management software developed by Islandia, N.Y.-based Computer Associates.

Specifically, NCR would equip its client/server computer platforms with Computer Associates' Unicenter TNG network management software.

Both companies said the alliance would give them a leg up in the financial institutions marketplace.

NCR, whose systems are used by banks for a variety of applications, including automated teller machine network management, would gain access to Unicenter clients, including ABN Amro North America and BankAmerica Corp. "It makes NCR a more attractive choice to banks," said an NCR spokesman.

Computer Associates' executives said the company would be helped by NCR's presence in Europe and Japan. "It will impact our presence in banks significantly," said Samuel Greenblatt, senior vice president of advanced technology for Computer Associates.

The alliance would be more broad in scope than a similar agreement Computer Associates struck with Digital Equipment Corp. in April, said Mr. Greenblatt.

Unicenter TNG software would be packaged with NCR's Unix-based systems by the end of the first quarter. The software would be available on NCR's Windows NT-based systems by the end of June.
