Card Briefs: Salvation Army Donors Can Pay by Amex Card

American Express Co. said its cards are the first to be accepted nationwide for Salvation Army donations.

To make contributions easier, the Salvation Army lets American Express cardmembers donate on an installment basis.

"We believe this partnership will better enable the Salvation Army to continue to provide help and hope to millions of people throughout the world," said commissioner Robert A. Watson, national commander of the 132- year-old charity.

"The Salvation Army has a tradition of leadership, and American Express is proud to be the first charge and credit card welcomed by the organization on a national scale," said David House, president, establishment services, American Express Travel Related Services Co.

In a recent survey conducted by American Express, 60% of cardmembers deemed American Express the "payment method of choice" for donations, compared with 34% preferring cash or check. Donations with American Express cards accounted for 73% of their total monetary contributions, with Amex donation charges averaging $537.
