Card Briefs: Fleet Phone Card Gift Aids Women's Shelters

Fleet Bank is using prepaid telephone cards as charitable contributions.

The New York subsidiary of Boston-based Fleet Financial Group said it donated 250 phone cards, with aggregate value of $11,250, to Henry Street Settlement's battered women's shelter.

The cards were among 1,000 valued at $45 each that Fleet distributed to women's shelters in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut region. Women in the shelters can use the cards to stay in touch with family members without being traced.

The main concern is harm by ex-husbands or ex-boyfriends, said Ralph Dickerson Jr., president of United Way of New York City, which coordinated the match between Fleet and Henry Street Settlement.
