Card Briefs: Hypercom Opens An Office in Beijing

Hypercom Corp.'s overseas division, Hypercom International, said it has opened an office in Beijing to house a new operating entity, Hypercom China Co.

The unit will coordinate the marketing and supply of payment terminals for the Chinese Golden Card projects and related efforts to develop an electronic payments infrastructure.

"Hypercom has great confidence in the rapid growth and effective adaptation of our products in China," said Hypercom International president Jairo Gonzalez.

"We are demonstrating that confidence by opening the full-function office in Beijing. Our goal is to ensure that our customers using the Hypercom transaction processing technology will maintain a competitive advantage."

The company, touting itself as the largest independent supplier of point of sale hardware now that competitor Verifone has been acquired by Hewlett- Packard Co., previously served China from Hypercom Asia Ltd. in Hong Kong.

Two more offices, in Guangzhou and Shanghai, are scheduled to open within six months.

Michael Sun, president of Hypercom Asia Ltd., also serves as president and chief executive officer of Hypercom China.
