In Brief: Cybercash Internet Payments for Japan

Cybercash Inc. said it plans to offer its Internet payment services in Japan through Cybercash KK, a joint venture it is forming with Softbank Corp. and several major Japanese banks and corporations.

Cybercash said the service will be a localized version, denominated in yen, of what it has introduced in the United States, including Cybercoin micropayments. Credit card payments will adhere to SET 1.0, the Secure Electronic Transactions standard that is nearing commercial readiness.

At least 20 merchants are signed for the launch, likely to occur between September and yearend. They include music.co.jp, a leading seller of music and video products, and Rakuten, an Internet shopping mall with several prominent merchant participants.
