Smart Bits: Switzerland's First Live SET Transaction

Tandem Computers Inc. and GlobeSet Inc. said they teamed up with the Telekurs banking network in Switzerland to complete the first live transaction in that country under the MasterCard-Visa Secure Electronic Transactions protocol.

The Eurocard-MasterCard purchase from Pizzakurier, a Zurich pizza company, took place July 1 as part of an Internet payment pilot developed by Telekurs Payserv AG.

GlobeSet's SET software-a series of products that includes an electronic wallet, merchant gateway, and certificate authority for authentication-ran on a Tandem server based on the Windows NT operating system. Tandem said transaction security will be upgraded in the future with its Atalla division's PayMaster Internet Security Processor.

"Interoperability is at the very heart of the SET protocol," said Michael Cation, chairman and chief executive officer of GlobeSet in Austin, Tex. "Using our SET software and Windows NT server systems from Tandem, Payserv is well positioned to interoperate with a wide range of SET-enabled merchants and partners around the world."

GlobeSet, part of a family of electronic commerce ventures financed by Bankers Trust New York Corp.'s BT Ventures, recently formed an alliance with Hypercom Corp. to distribute SET software worldwide.
