Card Briefs: Lockheed to Develop EBT System for D.C.

The District of Columbia has selected Lockheed Martin IMS to develop a system for delivering welfare benefits and food stamps electronically through banking networks.

The company will work with Chicago-based Citibank EBT Services, a subsidiary of Citicorp, and other subcontractors. The five-year contract is valued at $4 million.

Using plastic debit cards, recipients will be able to pay for food through point of sale terminals and use automated teller machines to withdraw cash.

Lockheed Martin and Citibank are developing, or have developed, systems in 26 states.
