Card Briefs: 1st Data Gets Relationship Software Rights

First Data Corp.'s card services group has obtained worldwide rights to use and relicense Pegasystems Inc.'s relationship management and workflow technologies in the card-issuing market.

First Data is the biggest processor of bank card accounts, and Cambridge, Mass.-based Pegasystems makes software for customer service and other aspects of relationship management.

One example of the partnership, First Data said, would be to combine its Empowered System Platform with Pegasystems technology that will make it easier to adapt and upgrade systems without reprogramming.

Pegasystems president Alan Trefler said he expects the agreement to bring in at least $50 million over five and a half years.

"The agreement represents a continuation of First Data's commitment to offer world-class solutions to clients," said Walter Hoff, executive vice president, who oversees the card services group. With Pegasystems technology, "our clients will have access to products unmatched in the industry."
