Union of Calif.Taps Sugiyama As Pacific Rim Corporate Chief

Union Bank of California, Los Angeles, has appointed Ikuzo Sugiyama as an executive vice president and general manager in charge of its Pacific Rim corporate group.

Mr. Sugiyama was the chief manager of corporate banking division 3 of the parent Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd. Earlier he was an executive in the Japanese corporate department of one of Union's predecessor banks.

Also, Union recently hired Stuart J. Lehr and Nik Banerjee as senior vice presidents. Both are based in San Francisco.

Mr. Lehr is chief compliance officer. He was the manager of the corporate compliance division at U.S. Bancorp, Portland, Ore., which Minneapolis-based First Bank System acquired this year.

Mr. Banerjee is director of marketing. He was a senior vice president at Bank of America, San Francisco, in charge of the interstate retail distribution division. From 1991 to 1994 he was director of retail banking at the Bank Administration Institute, Chicago, and was its executive for corporate development. Before that he was vice president of retail strategy at Maryland National Bank, Baltimore.
