Capital Briefs: Senate Judiciary Backs Farmer Bankruptcy Bill

Bankruptcy protections for farmers would be made permanent under legislation approved Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The protections, found in Chapter 12 of the bankruptcy code, allow farmers to enter bankruptcy reorganization without their creditors' approval. It also makes it harder for lenders to foreclose on farms held as collateral for other loans.

Chapter 12 was adopted in 1986 in the midst of the farm crisis. Lawmakers have extended the law several times since. It was scheduled to expire next fall.
