Card Briefs: Mellon to ProcessFor IGA Supermarkets

Mellon Network Services, a division of Mellon Bank Corp., has signed a contract to provide transaction processing services for the IGA Inc. supermarket network.

Mellon will provide Chicago-based IGA with an on-line point of sale system that will accept credit, debit, and automated teller machine cards at checkout.

"Card-based point of sale has become even more important to the retail grocery industry, especially because of increased competition and the need to offer consumers alternative and convenient payment options," said Rick Pylant, national sales director of Mellon Network Services.

Tom Haggai, chairman and chief executive officer of IGA, said the card system would strengthen its brand image.
