Capital Briefs: Lawmaker Seeks Cap On Fund's Consultants

Rep. Spencer Bachus is pushing to cap the pay of consultants hired by the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund.

The Alabama Republican is expected this week to ask the Treasury Department, which oversees the fund, to restrict these salaries to $100,000 or less.

If the Treasury does not cooperate, Rep. Bachus will introduce a bill to mandate the cap, said an aide to the lawmaker.

One consultant alone was paid nearly $217,000 for 15 months of part-time work, Rep. Bachus said.

"While the economically disadvantaged are underserved, the consultants are certainly doing splendidly," Rep. Bachus told Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin in a Sept. 8 letter, which was released last week.
