Smart Bits: Litronic Security SystemIn Card Reader for PCs

Litronic Inc. said its NetSign system has been integrated with SCM Microsystems Inc.'s Swap-Smart to allow for secure remote access to corporate networks or electronic mail.

SwapSmart is a PCMCIA computer card reader. It combines with NetSign to allow for token-based, or smart card, encryption or user authentication. Smart cards are seen as a workable method of allowing users to call into remote data or make transactions from any networked device.

The announcement followed Litronic's participation with several other companies in extending RSA Laboratories' Public Key Cryptographic Standard No. 11, which covers security tokens, to Netscape Communicator client software for World Wide Web access.

The links among NetSign, SwapSmart, and Communicator "offer mobile computer users optimum portable security by bringing smart cards to the personal computer," said Litronic chief operating officer Eric Greenberg.
