Tech Bytes: Visa Begins First Test Of SET in Malaysia

Visa International's Asia-Pacific region said its first Secure Electronic Transactions effort in Malaysia has been launched through Southern Bank.

After a trial period with the protocol that MasterCard and Visa are sponsoring for card payments over the Internet, the program is expected to be expanded significantly. It is beginning with a single virtual mall, Cyber Plaza.

Sema Group Asia Pacific/Trintech and Microsoft Malaysia/-PDX Infoworld collaborated on the Malaysian SET project, which Visa expects will get a boost from the country's Internet-based industrial policy known as the Multimedia Super Corridor and embracing the concept of "borderless marketing."

Dato Tan Teong Hean, chief executive director of Southern Bank, said technology is bringing "the single biggest change in the Malaysian banking landscape. Initiatives such as this one will help position Malaysia as a global center of information technology excellence."

Visa International's other SET efforts include projects in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Australia, and a 16-country European program in which Trintech is also closely involved.
