Short Takes: Schwab's On-Line Asset Allocator Debuts

Charles Schwab & Co. has launched the Asset Allocation Toolkit, a product to let customers assess their investment goals on-line.

The product, unveiled this month, allows people to set investment goals and then "figure out what the appropriate asset allocations would be for them," said Jeff Lyons, a vice president in mutual funds at the San Francisco-based discount brokerage firm.

Toolkit also takes the information in the investors' own accounts and maps their holdings against historical performance and model portfolios, said Mr. Lyons.

It is free for Schwab customers and available through the San Francisco firm's Web site at www.Schwab.com.

The firm also recently set up links to the various fund companies available through its OneSource Web site. OneSource is Schwab's mutual fund supermarket.

"Let's say you're researching the Janus fund; you can get manager commentary or, with another click of a button, get their prospectus," Mr. Lyons said.
