1st Union Insider Becomes President

First Union Corp. said Friday it has named vice chairman John Georgius president of the $144 billion-asset company, succeeding the retiring Anthony Terracciano.

Mr. Georgius, 53, has been vice chairman of Charlotte, N.C.-based First Union since 1996, managing operations in the company's seven southeastern states.

As president, he will also oversee operations in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut, areas formerly under Mr. Terracciano's supervision.

First Union's capital management group, consumer group, automation and operations group, and other staff functions also will report to Mr. Georgius.

Mr. Georgius joined First Union in 1975. He has led several key projects , including the redesign of its commercial bank, an ongoing redesign of its consumer bank, and the integration of several mergers.
