E-Trade Opens Fund Supermarket

based E-Trade Group Inc. unveiled its own mutual fund supermarket Monday.

The Mutual Fund Center offers about 3,000 mutual funds from multiple families, including T.Rowe Price, Founders, and Putnam, said an E-Trade spokeswoman.

Roughly 500 are no-load, no-transaction-fee funds, she said.

Customers can access the mart over the Internet or by phone, the spokeswoman said.

This week E-Trade will start a direct mail campaign promoting the fund supermarket, and next week it will launch a series of television ads.

The direct mail campaign will be handled by Pickholz Tweedy Cowan LLC, and the television campaign was created by Gotham Inc., both New York-based advertising agencies.

E-Trade's supermarket will be competing with the OneSource program from Charles Schwab & Co., also based in San Francisco, and Boston-based Fidelity Investment's FundsNetwork mart.
