Capital Brief: Ex-Hawaii Regulator Nominated as FDIC Chief

The White House on Friday nominated former Hawaii Banking Commissioner Donna A. Tanoue to be chairwoman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

She would fill the remainder of Ricki Helfer's five-year term, which expires in October 1999.

Ms. Tanoue, 43, is a partner with the law firm Goodsill, Anderson, Quinn & Stifel in Honolulu and specializes in banking, real estate, and government affairs. She led the $50 million bailout of the islands' industrial loan companies as commissioner of financial institutions in the mid-1980s.

No opposition to the nomination has surfaced yet, however, Ms. Tanoue's confirmation is unlikely until March when Congress gets back to business.
