First Boston Names Equity Research Chief

Michael L. Mayo has been named head of U.S. bank equity research at CS First Boston Corp., filling a post vacated two years ago by Thomas H. Hanley.

Mr. Mayo, 33, was previously the regional bank analyst at Lehman Brothers for three years. He will continue to cover large regional banks, he said Monday, and "national" banks like Citicorp.

The bank equity group at First Boston includes analyst Bradley G. Ball, who follows large institutionally oriented banks, including J.P. Morgan & Co. and Bankers Trust New York Corp.; and Sean Ryan, who covers banks with midsize-market capitalization.

This is Mr. Mayo's second tour of duty at a Swiss-related firm. Before Lehman Brothers, he worked as an analyst at UBS Securities from 1992 to 1994.

Before that he was an analyst at the Federal Reserve Board from 1988 to 1992 and International Business Machines Corp. from 1985 to 1988. He is a graduate of George Washington University and the University of Maryland.
