Mutual Funds Chief For Smith Barney Unit

Travelers Group tapped Laurie A. Hesslein, a 38-year-old executive in its structured portfolios group, on Monday to become director of mutual funds for Smith Barney Asset Management.

Ms. Hesslein, an executive vice president, will assume responsibility for $84 billion of mutual funds. She will report to Thomas W. Jones, chairman and chief executive officer of Smith Barney Asset Management.

Her job was left vacant when Jessica Bibliowicz, daughter of Travelers Corp. chairman Sanford I. Weill, left the company earlier this year.

Smith Barney Asset Management has $118 billion of assets under management.

Ms. Hesslein will continue to oversee unit investment trusts and an investment advisory service.
