Card Briefs: At Canadian McDonald's, Burgers and Air Miles

International Verifact Inc. has installed terminals in Canadian McDonald's that let customers accumulate points for the Air Miles Reward Program.

Air Miles, a program of Loyalty Group Canada, has 5.6 million participants accumulating points through everyday purchases at 10,000 sponsor locations.

The International Verifact software developed for the loyalty group has gone into all McDonald's restaurants in the province of Manitoba.

"One of our key success factors is in developing delivery systems that are customer friendly," said Alex Foord, group manager of information technology at Loyalty Group. The V2000 payment terminals "ensure that both our sponsors and collectors can participate in the program with the swipe of a card."

Verifact vice president Geoff Bowen said the spread of Air Miles since its start in 1992 to 50% of Canadian households adds impetus to the overall growth in the automated point of sale market. The fast-food sector alone has 19,000 card-accepting locations, up from 3,200 in 1993, he said.
