Deposit Guaranty Up On Takeover Rumors

Shares of Deposit Guaranty Corp. jumped $7.375, to $48.25, in heavy trading Friday, amid rumors that the Jackson, Miss., banking company would be bought.

Officials of Deposit Guaranty, which ranks second in deposits in Mississippi behind Trustmark Corp., also of Jackson, declined to comment on the market activity.

Michael Granger, analyst at Fox-Pitt, Kelton, said possible buyers include Regions Financial Corp., SouthTrust Corp., and Amsouth Bancorp., all of Birmingham, Ala.; SunTrust Inc., Atlanta; and Union Planters Corp., Memphis.
