Card Briefs: Total System to Process Canadian Tire Cards

Total System Services Inc. announced a seven-year contract with Canadian Tire Acceptance Ltd. to process six million MasterCard private-label cards.

Canadian Tire of Welland, Ontario, previously processed its portfolio in-house. The Canadian Tire Corp. subsidiary is the fifth-largest MasterCard issuer in Canada, with 431 retail stores.

Total System will convert Canadian Tire to its TS2(R) Cardholder System, a year 2000-compliant card processing platform.

Philip W. Tomlinson, president of Total System, said the contract was a coup for his company. Canadian Tire "has a very strong portfolio which has shown remarkable strength and flexibility in the marketplace," he said.

Tom Gauld, president of Canadian Tire Acceptance, said his company was impressed that Total System had opened its first Canadian subsidiary office in Welland. Mr. Gauld said Total System will "enable us to quickly and flexibly design new credit card products, enhance existing offerings, and increase our level of customer service."

In related news, Total System has promoted Daniel J. Charron and Barry J. Tomkins to group vice president. Mr. Charron had previously served as vice president and director of conversions and project management, and as the director of the TS(2) conversion department. Mr. Tomkins was previously vice president and served as manager of programming resources for the NationsBank team.

TSYS Total Solutions, a telemarketing and direct mail subsidiary, has promoted L. Patton Elliott to senior vice president. He had previously been vice president of operations.
