Capital Briefs: Agency to Test Trust Data Sampling on Net

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has launched an experiment to gather 1997 trust data from banks over the Internet.

The agency-which does an annual survey of assets and earnings from trust activities at 4,000 banks, thrifts, and uninsured trust companies on behalf of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council-last week invited the 200 largest trust institutions to participate. Agency officials hope at least 50 will sign up for the pilot test.

Reporting via the Internet should be faster and reduce errors, FDIC Supervision Director Nicholas J. Ketcha Jr. wrote Dec. 11 to senior trust officers.
