Utah Licenses Zions Unit for Digital ID

A subsidiary of Zions First National Bank has been licensed as a certification authority by the Utah Department of Commerce.

The subsidiary, Digital Signature Trust Co., plays a key role in the public key infrastructure sanctioned by Utah's pioneering digital signature law. Relying on data encryption and digital signing technology, the public key infrastructure, or PKI, would assure security and authenticity of electronic documents and transactions.

Certco LLC, a New York-based data security company that began with venture capital funding from Bankers Trust New York Corp., is supplying the root certification authority that accredits Digital Signature Trust and any other digital authentication companies that Utah licenses.

"A digital signature is as good as a paper signature in the state of Utah," said Alan Asay, Certco legal counsel and vice president of business policy.
