1st Maryland Promotes Head Of Corporate To Executive VP

First Maryland Bancorp, Baltimore, the U.S. subsidiary of Dublin-based Allied Irish Banks PLC, promoted senior vice president John A. Emens to executive vice president.

He continues as head of First Maryland's corporate and international banking group, a post he has held since last year.

The group comprises international, national, corporate, middle-market, cash management, leasing, health care, communications, transportation financial institutions, nonprofit, and trade finance.

Mr. Emens, who joined First Maryland in 1977, had been vice president and manager of the European division from 1979 to 1982 and was vice president and manager of its branch in London from 1982 to 1986. Before he joined the company, Mr. Emens was an assistant vice president of Marine Midland Bank's national division in Buffalo.

SOUTHEAST

BB&T Corp., Winston-Salem, N.C., promoted Tim Davis to executive vice president and manager of the human systems division.

He had been manager of the company's quality support and education department. The newly created division combines quality support with the human resources department.

Mr. Davis and his staff of 160 are now responsible for education, compensation, and benefits issues.

Amsouth Bancorp., Birmingham, Ala., elected Victoria B. Jackson of DSS/ProDiesel Inc. and Frank A. Newman of Eckerd Corp. to the board of directors.

Ms. Jackson is president and chief executive officer of the Nashville- based diesel product supplier.

Mr. Newman is chairman, president, and CEO of the drug store chain, which is based in Clearwater, Fla. He joined it in July 1993 as president and chief operating officer and became CEO in 1996 and chairman in February.

SOUTHWEST

Hibernia National Bank, New Orleans, the lead subsidiary of Hibernia Corp., has promoted senior vice president Suzette J. Prechter to executive vice president and vice president John F. Marshall Jr. to senior vice president.

Ms. Prechter is the chief credit officer for Louisiana, responsible for Hibernia's commercial loan approval and analysis statewide.

Mr. Marshall is responsible for credit policy for the holding company, commercial credit analysis for the Southeast, and credit approval for the U.S. corporate division.

In addition, the bank promoted assistant vice presidents Wade Carwile and Karen Tipton to vice president.

Mr. Carwile is responsible for developing business relationships with automobile and boat dealers, as well as rental car companies.

Ms. Tipton is responsible for small-business relationships in uptown New Orleans.

Hibernia also hired Barton Black and Kristopher Ernst for the control group, as well as Louis Brusini and John Costello for asset-backed services. All were named vice presidents.

Mr. Black is the line-of-business controller for support services. He had been a senior accountant at Deloitte & Touche.

Mr. Ernst is the line-of-business controller for administrative services and employee and public relations.

He was a financial planning manager at Campo Electronics.

Mr. Brusini develops relationships with corporate customers in the southeastern United States. Mr. Costello manages field examinations of current and potential lending customers. He was a vice president at Mellon Bank.

WEST

Comerica Bank-California, San Jose, a subsidiary of Detroit-based Comerica Inc., hired Gary Stephens to be vice president and assistant group manager.

He is responsible for the development of new and current business clients for the community business banking division.

Mr. Stephens was vice president and manager of business lending at the San Jose branch of Sumitomo Bank of California.
