In Brief: 60 Wis. Banks in Surchargeless ATM Link

About one-third of Wisconsin's community banks have linked their automated teller machines through a month-old, surcharge-free network.

About 60 banks with 160 ATMs have joined the network, which is sponsored by the Community Bankers of Wisconsin and Tyme Corp. Daryll J. Lund, executive vice president of the trade group, said he hopes to add about 40 ATMs to the network next year.

Response to the idea has been strong, Mr. Lund said. Customers are learning about the network through statement stuffers and lobby displays. The community bankers group is also sponsoring radio ads during local sports programming to try to attract business.

Mr. Lund said a regional bank holding company he would not name recently adjusted its ATM service fees to give customers a few free out-of-network transactions per month.
