Capital Brief: Basel Conference in April on Year-2000

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision has scheduled a world conference on the year-2000 computer problem for April 7 and 8 at its headquarters in Switzerland.

The purpose of the meeting will be to raise international awareness of the feared turn-of-the-century computer problems that could be triggered by a flaw in the way large computer systems record dates.

U.S. regulators have said they are concerned that many other countries are lagging in preparations for the so-called "millennium bug" and that their uncorrected glitches could infect the computers of financial institutions here that are otherwise debugged.

Other sponsors of the summit are: the Committee on Payment System Settlement, the International Association of Insurance Supervisors, and the International Organization of Securities Commissioners. -Dean Anason
