Banc One Adding 1,000 Machines in Circle K Stores

Banc One Corp., one of the biggest buyers of automated teller machines, has acquired 1,000 for Circle K convenience store locations in the South and West.

Diebold Inc., supplier of the machines, announced the sale this week. The North Canton, Ohio, manufacturer said Banc One has already deployed half the model 1064i cash dispensers, which come with color screens and high-resolution graphics.

Spurred by the ability to impose surcharges on cash withdrawals, Columbus, Ohio-based Banc One has accelerated ATM placements with several retail chains. The strategy is to "provide convenient access to cash for consumers and small-business owners throughout the United States," said Gregory L. Ford, convenience banking manager.

Banc One markets most of its off-premises machines under the brand name Rapid Cash and charges $1 to its own customers and $1.50 to noncustomers.

It said earlier this year that 4,000 machines would be distributed among Mail Boxes Etc. offices, Diamond Shamrock gas stations, and BP Oil convenience stores, and 2,000 at Rite Aid Corp. drug stores.

At midyear Banc One was already the fifth-largest ATM owner in the country, with 3,807 machines. BankAmerica Corp. and NationsBank Corp. led the pack.

But Banc One is closing fast. This year's installations will top 5,000 machines, it says, and it aims to have more than 20,000 in operation by the end of 2000.
