Card Briefs: Magic Line's Volume Jumped 21% Last Year

Magic Line Inc., the largest midwestern automated teller machine network, said its volume grew 21% in 1996, to 122.8 million transactions.

ATM transactions rose 16%, to 102.3 million. Point of sale transactions rose 88%, to 21.3 million.

Magic Line added 3,000 merchants to its on-line debit program.

In addition, more than 250 financial institutions are in its off-line Visa Cash or MasterMoney debit programs, whose volume rose 111%, to 4.9 million transactions.

The number of financial institutions participating in the network topped 1,000 at yearend, up from 650.

The rise partly reflected Magic Line's merger with the EFT Illinois network in August.

Magic Line now has a presence in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky.
