Smart Bits: Military Buys Drexler Optical Memory Cards

Drexler Technology Corp. said the Department of Defense has ordered 122,000 optical memory cards.

Independent purchase orders for 50,000 cards and 6,000 cards were made by different branches of the Department of Defense through Information Spectrum Inc., a government contractor and marketer of Drexler technology. Drexler said it had already shipped 56,000 cards.

The cards will be used for the Automated Manifest System, a cargo- handling program for shipping supplies to military installations. The Defense Department has adopted Drexler's Dela-format LaserCard as a standard.
