Fleet Hires Former AIG, Kemper Exec To Run Fund Unit

Fleet Financial Group announced Wednesday that it had hired Robert L. Ash as managing director of Fleet Investment Management.

Mr. Ash fills a vacancy created last May, when Michael J. Rothmeier resigned amid allegations that brokers he supervised overcharged customers.

Mr. Ash, 51, is responsible for Fleet's retail mutual fund family, Galaxy Funds, and for Fleet Brokerage Securities. He reports to Gunnar S. Overstrom, vice chairman of Fleet Financial Group.

In October, Fleet an-nounced it was dividing Mr. Rothmeier's former responsibilities between two new positions.

It filled the first opening immediately, naming Gary W. Anderson managing director of retirement services.

Mr. Ash, who started at Boston-based Fleet last week, was a consultant at Warren Management Consultants, New York.

Before that, he was president and chief executive officer of AIG Asset Management Services, New York, where he managed retail and institutional investment product originations.

Before AIG, Mr. Ash was chairman of Kemper Mutual Funds Sales Co., Chicago. At Kemper, he oversaw investment product origination and distribution through broker-dealers, financial planners, and financial institutions, including banks. He also did a two-year stint at Keystone Group Inc., where he was senior vice president.
