BankMate, the St. Louis-based automated teller machine network that MasterCard International bought in 1994, is for sale.
MasterCard said Wednesday that it had invited several organizations to bid on BankMate, which has 3,500 ATMs and ranks ninth among networks in transaction volume, according to Bank Network News.
Since acquiring BankMate, MasterCard has added 150 members, for a total of 700, and reported a 50% increase in monthly switch volume.
MasterCard said its decision to sell reflects a strategy to focus on core businesses.
