Card Briefs: Australia Bank to Issue Olympics-Related Visa

Westpac Banking Corp. has announced the first credit card marketing tie-in with the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

It will issue a cobranded Visa card, the first to carry the Sydney 2000 logo, that offers travel rewards from Ansett Australia while generating contributions to the Australian Olympic team.

Cardholders will earn one point in Ansett's Global Rewards program for each dollar spent, while a portion of annual subscription fees will go to the athletic programs.

"The Global Rewards Westpac Visa will be an important element in our re- branded rewards program," said Ansett executive chairman Rod Eddington. "Our 850,000 members will have greater flexibility and choice in accumulating frequent flier points (while) helping Australia's Olympic hopefuls."

Applicants before April 11 will get 1,000 bonus points, pay no card fee the first year, and become eligible for prizes including a five-night travel package to the Olympics.
