Capital Briefs: NCUA Asks Court to End Curb on Credit Unions

The government has asked the federal appeals court in Washington to let credit unions add new companies to their fields of membership while the Supreme Court considers the AT&T Family Federal Credit Union case.

The National Credit Union Administration said it is essential that the appeals court suspend a lower court order that prevents credit unions from serving new companies.

Without the ability to diversify their membership, some of the 3,586 occupation-based credit unions may not survive until the Supreme Court decides on the case next year, NCUA said in its March 6 motion. - Jaret Seiberg
