Capital Briefs: A Scolding on Push for Credit Union Bill

Marge Roukema, R-N.J., scolded Rep. Gerald B.H. Solomon on Wednesday for claiming House Speaker Newt Gingrich would persuade a member of the House Banking Committee to introduce legislation easing credit union membership limits.

"It's entirely inappropriate for him (Rep. Solomon) to be prompting this kind of speculation," said Rep. Roukema, chairwoman of House Banking's financial institutions subcommittee.

Speaking to a gathering of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions, Rep. Roukema said Congress should wait until the Supreme Court decides next year whether credit unions may legally serve employees of more than one company.

A spokesman for Rep. Solomon said the New York Republican and Speaker Gingrich were still seeking a House Banking member to introduce the bill. "There's no sense in stalling," the staffer said.
