Card Briefs: Burlington Coat Buys Checkmate Debit System

Checkmate Electronics Inc. said that Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp. has bought about $1.2 million worth of signature capture and debit terminals for its more than 250 stores nationwide.

The deal completes the Burlington, N.J., retailer's acquisition of a complete Checkmate Payment System 2000. The Burlington had already bought and installed Checkmate check readers.

Accepting debit cards lets Burlington offer customers more payment options while reducing transaction costs, said Michael Prince, the retailer's information officer.

The system can also reduce administrative and other costs associated with accepting credit cards, he added.
