OCC Panel Created to Help Reach Bankless

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has created a committee to help national banks reach the 12.5% of American consumers who do not use financial institutions.

Through public meetings, forums, and research, the panel will explore ways to extend financial services to households that do not have checking and savings accounts. It also will research how credit scoring affects consumer access to banking services and how on-line banking can increase the number of consumers with bank accounts.

The panel, which will meet quarterly beginning at the end of March, is led by Bert A. Otto, assistant deputy comptroller for compliance management.

Twelve members of the OCC staff, including examiners, economists, and lawyers, will serve on the panel.
